Principles of Design
2D to 3D Composition
Winter final
(February 2020)
Original draft, only allowed to use shape (no color) to describe a relationship between two emotional concepts. Mine were Pride and Logic
Added color and texture to original draft to build on the relationship between emotions, showing the interplay between the two
Created an oversized three dimensional version, made out of cardboard boxes, spray glue, and printed paper with the same patterns used on two dimensional draft
Used tie line and pulleys to rig pieces, concealed with ribbons. This allowed for the bottom piece to separate and move away from the top. Also incorporated lighting within the room to highlight the piece with white and red to build on color scheme
3D Environment
Spring Final
(April 2020)
After being sent home in the spring quarter because of COVID lockdowns, we had to adapt our class to work online. We did a group project where we had to develop ideas for a 3D environment based on randomly selected words, each given a season, place, and adjective
Using our words “Humble French Summer”, our group set out to find research images that related to those ideas. We also started to develop a loose story based on this, to create inhabitants of the environment. Through several discussions, we settled on a lesbian cottagecore couple who lived in the French countryside
We made image banks to get inspiration for the types of objects that would be in the environment, and decided that our inhabitants would likely be the type of people to go on a picnic together. As we presented ideas to the class, we got feedback on what people responded to and what they didn’t to further develop our 3D concept
As it was a virtual group project, only one of us could create the final draft. I found as many items as I could that were based on our research, and found a location to set up, photograph, and film our still life scene. We created space for each of the two characters, and picked things that would represent each of their personalities. The link to our image banks as well as the final video can be found below:
Kite Project
(Spring 2020)
The assignment: Design, construct, and fly a kite.
My approach: Build a box kite out of 1/8th inch dowels, plastic shower curtain sheeting, string, and glue
Idea Container
(Fall 2019)
The assignment: Show what the inside of your mind / ideas looks like using a found object
My approach: Used an empty can of soup as a container and battery powered fairy lights to represent the ideas bursting out of my head
